Michael Foale is one of Britain's most accomplished astronauts and a pioneering figure in human spaceflight. Born in the United Kingdom, he studied Physics through the Natural Sciences Tripos at the University of Cambridge, graduating in 1972, before earning a doctorate in Laboratory Astrophysics in 1982. In 1987, he was selected as an Astronaut Candidate by NASA, beginning a distinguished career that would span decades and multiple groundbreaking missions. Foale made history in 1995 when he became the first British-born astronaut to perform a spacewalk. He is also the only NASA astronaut to have completed extended-duration missions aboard both the Russian space station Mir and the International Space Station, giving him unparalleled experience of long-term life and work in orbit. Beyond his achievements in space, Foale held senior leadership positions within NASA, including serving as Deputy Associate Administrator for Exploration Operations at NASA Headquarters in 2004. In recognition of his outstanding contributions to science, exploration and international cooperation, he was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) by Her Majesty The Queen in 2005.
