Qiandao Lake, also known as Xin’anjiang Reservoir, is located in Chun’an County, Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, with a small section extending to the northwest of Jiande City, Hangzhou. It is a large artificial lake formed by damming the upper reaches of the Xin’an River for the construction of the Xin’anjiang Hydropower Station. After the reservoir was impounded, the submerged hills formed 1,078 islands of various sizes, giving the lake its name. The scenic area is divided into six tourist zones: Southeast Lake Area, Central Lake Area, Northwest Lake Area, Southwest Lake Area, Northeast Lake Area, and Stone Forest Scenic Area. Construction of the Xin’anjiang Reservoir began in 1955; the dam was closed for water storage in 1959, and the reservoir was fully completed in 1960. On December 15, 1984, the Zhejiang Provincial Place Names Committee officially renamed it Qiandao Lake. It is recognized as one of the Three Great Thousand-Island Lakes in the World. The reservoir dam stands 105 meters high and 462 meters long; the lake stretches about 150 kilometers with a maximum width of over 10 kilometers. The maximum water depth exceeds 100 meters, with an average depth of 30.44 meters. At normal water level, the lake covers about 580 square kilometers with a storage capacity of 17.8 billion cubic meters. At the highest water level, there are 1,078 islands larger than 0.25 square kilometers, most of which are under 2 square kilometers, with a total island area of 409 square kilometers. Today, Qiandao Lake boasts Class I surface water quality with visibility reaching 7–12 meters, earning it the reputation of “China’s Finest Freshwater”. It serves as a critical drinking water source for over 10 million residents in Hangzhou and Jiaxing.
