How to Ride a Motorcycle in Sand
Riding a motorcycle in sand can feel intimidating, unpredictable and completely exhausting when you first experience it. Whether you’re riding an adventure bike, dual sport, enduro bike or dirt bike, sand riding is one of the most challenging terrains for many riders to learn — especially if you live somewhere like the UK where opportunities to practise riding in deep sand are pretty limited. In this video, I share my top tips for riding motorcycles in sand, including the key techniques that have helped me while competing in desert rallies, riding dunes, and tackling sandy off-road terrain around the world. If you’ve ever searched for things like “how to ride a motorcycle in sand”, “sand riding tips”, “how to ride an adventure bike in sand”, or “how to stay upright in deep sand”, this video is for you. Over the years, after competing in multiple desert races and spending more time riding in sandy terrain, I’ve gradually developed my own technique for sand riding and learned what genuinely helps when the bike starts moving around underneath you. Sand can feel chaotic at first because the front wheel moves constantly, the bike feels unstable, and your natural instinct is often to tense up or slow down — which usually makes things harder. People often ask me how I trained for desert racing, especially when most of my riding has been based in the UK where proper sand riding terrain is rare. The honest answer is… I never really did. The first time I rode deep sand properly was actually during a race itself, and I simply had to adapt, survive, and learn quickly as I went along. While riding here in Australia, it felt like the perfect opportunity to break down some of the fundamentals of riding in sand and explain the techniques that made the biggest difference to me. In this video we cover: 🏍️ Motorcycle body position for riding in sand 🏍️ How to use momentum properly in deep sand 🏍️ Adventure bike sand riding techniques 🏍️ Throttle control and clutch control tips 🏍️ How to stop fighting the bike 🏍️ Why relaxing is so important when sand riding 🏍️ Standing vs sitting in sand 🏍️ How to improve confidence riding off-road 🏍️ Common mistakes riders make in sand 🏍️ Tips for dual sport, ADV and dirt bike riders One of the biggest lessons with sand riding is understanding that the motorcycle will move around underneath you — and that’s actually normal. The goal is not to completely stop the movement, but to learn how to stay balanced, relaxed and controlled while allowing the bike to do what it needs to do. Once you begin to trust the bike, maintain momentum, and stop overcorrecting every little movement, sand riding becomes far more manageable… and honestly, a lot of fun. Whether you’re preparing for an adventure motorcycle trip, planning a desert rally, learning off-road riding skills, or simply trying to build confidence on loose terrain, hopefully this video helps make sand riding feel a little less intimidating.
