Tidal flats are unique coastal areas formed by long-term buildup of fine particles of sand or mud carried in by tidal currents. These areas become submerged in water at high tide and exposed at low tide, and they expand as more sediments accumulate. Tidal flats are widely observed in the west and south coasts of Korea characterized by large tidal waves, extremely uneven coastline, and numerous islands and bays. 83% of the tidal flats, in terms of area, are found on the west coast, and it is considered one of the world’s five largest tidal flats along with the eastern coast of Canada, the coast of Georgia of the United States, the coastline of the North Sea in Europe, and the Amazon drainage basin area. Also, the tidal flats of Korea were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List on July 26, 2021 as “Getbol, ​​Korean Tidal Flats.” Four tidal flats were inscribed, and they are Seocheon Tidal Flat (Seocheon, Chungcheongnam-do Province), Gochang Tidal Flat (Gochang, Jeollabuk-do Province), Sinan Tidal Flat (Shinan, Jeollanam-do Province), and Boseong-Suncheon Tidal Flat (Boseong and Suncheon, Jeollanam-do Province), all of which have been designated as wetland protected areas. #Korea #KoreanCulture #KoreanHeritage
