This final leg of our Hungary RV tour was supposed to be a beautiful conclusion—with all the impressions, moments, and encounters we were able to experience in just under three weeks. We visited Lake Balaton, stayed overnight at a winery, took a small boat trip through the caves of Tapolca, and bathed in the famous thermal lake of Hévíz—places full of charm, warmth, and unforgettable experiences. But unfortunately, everything turned out differently than we had hoped. During our trip, our little Amy was probably bitten by a meadow tick, which transmitted babesia—tiny parasites that destroy red blood cells and can attack organs. Babesiosis is a serious, sometimes life-threatening disease that is significantly more common in many Southern and Eastern European countries—including Hungary—than in Germany. Amy had to be treated in the hospital for several days and fed through a nasal tube. She was allowed to return home for a while, but her condition worsened again, necessitating a blood transfusion. There are now very tentative signs of improvement – ​​and we hope a little more every day. We also met another traveling couple in Hungary whose dog also contracted babesiosis. This made us realize: These are not isolated cases. That's precisely why we're sharing this video – not to scare people, but to raise awareness. ➡️ Our appeal to all dog owners: Regularly protect your dogs with approved tick protection products (spot-on, collar, etc.) and check carefully for ticks after every walk.
