LA BATALLA DE TAMAMES 1809: La Victoria Española que Liberó Salamanca y Enfureció a Bonaparte
In the autumn of 1809, with Napoleon dominating Europe, a Spanish army achieved a clean and decisive victory against the French imperial troops. Today, together with David Canorea, we delve into one of the most important and least-known triumphs of the Peninsular War with historical rigor. After expelling Marshals Soult and Ney from Galicia, the Duke of Parque's Left Army marched on Salamanca, occupied by the French General Jean Gabriel Marchand and his IV Corps. The Spanish, with some 10,000 infantry, 1,200 cavalry, and 14 cannons, faced a similar but better-equipped French force near the town of Tamames. The battle was fought on October 18, 1809. The French launched a fierce attack on the Spanish left flank, but the infantry responded with great bravery and discipline, engaging in hand-to-hand combat. The Spanish reaction was so decisive that it dismantled the French right flank and forced Marchand to order a retreat after suffering more than 1,300 casualties. This victory was not only a tactical blow: it allowed for the subsequent liberation of Salamanca and demonstrated that Napoleon's troops were not invincible on Spanish soil. In this program we analyze: The strategic context of the campaign The deployment and maneuvers of both armies The key aspects of the battle and the role of the Spanish infantry The military and political consequences Historical lessons that remain relevant today Would you like us to delve deeper into another battle of the Peninsular War?
