IPSC Quick Tips - Drills Training Session #4 (E14)
Don't forget to LIKE, COMMENT and COMMENT! Thanks!! Here are a few more ideas for range training. This range training session revolves around two drills. The first drill is workup (progressive) training for the second drill. You don't need a lot of equipment to setup these drills: 4 shooting boxes, 10 target stands, and 8 IPSC targets. I use USPSA targets cutting out the A zone to simulate walls with ports for the second drill. If you don't have shooting boxes use some orange spray paint to make boxes on the ground. Keep the shooting boxes a little more than an arm's length away from the port so that you cannot stick your gun through the ports. You shouldn't stick your gun through a port as it can cause you all sorts of problems if you had a malfunction, or you may hit the top frame of the port during recoil which could result in losing your front sight, etc. Remember, if you stick your gun through a port, it will cost you time to pull it out when exiting the position, it will cost you time if you have to deal with a malfunction as you need to pull the gun out of the port, and so on. Therefore, get used to shooting through ports but from behind the port not in it. By placing the shooting well behind the ports, you will get used to shooting from behind the ports. Over time, your subconscious shouldn't allow you to get too close to the port unless you do it as a very deliberate action such as to engage a very close or oddly placed target. In terms of the distances for the targets, in Drill 1, place them between 10-15 yards or meters. Don't make it too challenging as you want to build your confidence. You want good hits. Overtime, pace the targets further out as you become a better shooter. For Drill 2, place the targets between 10-15 yards / meters as well. A variation in terms of target array is to set up a close target at one or both ports approximately 5 yards / meters. this would definitely require you to conduct a mag change. As well, your target sequence should end with the close target. Why? It is easier to start shooting slow and speed up (ending on the close target) than to start shooting fast and slow down to engage the distant targets. It's a Rule of Thumb. Proper target engagement sequence is important as it may save you time, make your entrance and exit from a shooting position faster / smooth, and / or increase your speed of engagement of a particular target array. Therefore, you need to consider your target engagement sequence. Conduct Drill 2 a number of times without a mag change before adding the mag change into the drill. You should always look at making your training progressive in nature...build up to more complications / complexity. When moving from position to position, try to keep your gun high. You want your gun to cover the least amount of distance (have the least amount of movement) when you are getting ready to engage a target. It is faster to engage a target if your gun is high and you have only to raise it slightly and pushing out towards the target rather than bring it up from you stomach level up to your face and then push out. As well, watch your muzzle direction as you move and how you carry your gun (position / location of your gun). Economy of movement is important and will save you time.
