The Last Well Digger in Tennessee Who Hit a Marble Floor — What Was Carved Into It (1897)

In July of 1897, a well digger named Ezra Flint took a contract at half his normal rate on the Holloway brothers' farm in Decatur County, Tennessee. He needed the money. Three weeks into the job, at eighty-one feet down, his assistant's shovel hit something that didn't sound like rock. It sounded hollow. They widened the hole and found an edge — straight, polished, white marble with grey veining, running horizontally into the darkness as far as the lantern reached. Flint spent two hours at the bottom of that hole with a notebook. When he climbed out, Clinton Holloway was standing at the rim. Not surprised. Waiting. He had a price ready before Flint said a word. The hole was filled the next morning. The marble is still down there.
