In this recorded virtual symposium from August 18, 2021, Dr. Anne Duray presented a talk titled “Underwater Archaeology.” Dr. Anne Duray introduced underwater archaeological practices that help experts interpret our human past. Specifically, Dr. Duray explained the training and methodology of underwater archaeology to help the virtual audience understand how archaeologists approach underwater sites, and shared her personal experiences and anecdotes in underwater and field archaeology. Her talk included images to explain underwater archaeology tools, methods, and practices, and shared how archaeologists map, study, and catalog artifacts. The symposium helped the public understand the dedicated work of archaeology and preparation needed to undertake archaeological projects. After the presentation, there was time for questions and discussion. Dr. Duray holds a Ph.D. in Classics with an Archaeology track from Stanford University and is an Editorial Assistant for the American Journal of Archaeology, and served as a Lecturer at the Archaeology Center at Stanford University. This is the final talk in the Summer Symposia series connected to The Antikythera Mechanism exhibition at the Nashville Parthenon, which is on display from June 4 through September 26, 2021. This Summer Symposia project and The Antikythera Mechanism exhibition is funded in part by a grant from Humanities Tennessee, an independent affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. It is also sponsored by Centennial Park Conservancy, Archaeological Institute of America- Nashville Society, and Metro Nashville Parks and Recreation.
