After a successful career as a keyboardist for two of the biggest rock bands on the planet, he retired in 2002 to compose classical pieces. For him, classical and popular were just aspects of the same entity, good music. The path was almost natural. Having learned to play the classics on the piano, Lord fell in love with rock after listening to Buddy Holly and began playing in jazz, rhythm and blues, and then rock combos. In 1969, at the age of 27, he composed, with the help of conductor Malcolm Arnold, a Concerto for group and orchestra, tempering the structure of a classical piece with the aggressive electricity of Deep Purple's most creative phase, the same team that would compose Smoke on the Water in 1972.
