Double Sunset – KLM 787-9 Full Flight Amsterdam to Salt Lake City

Full flight video from gate to gate, with a time lapse during the cruise phase. This is KLM's seasonal Salt Lake City flight, which has a fairly late schedule for a transatlantic flight, departing westbound around 5:00 PM with a 7:00 PM arrival. Because it was starting to get dark earlier this time of year, we actually saw the sun set almost completely before it rose again, then set again as we were arriving. I had to dim the window a bit to keep the sun out of everyone's eyes, which makes it a little hard to see for a few minutes, but apart from that the views on this flight were pretty incredible. We departed to the Southwest on the Kaagban, giving us a sunlit view of the southern Netherlands before climbing through a layer of clouds and turning North. Out route took us over the Shetland Islands, then just north of Iceland before crossing over the middle of Greenland, at which point the sun moved to the other side and I could "raise" the window a bit. From there we had great views of Greenland and Northern Canada, eventually flying over a snow-covered Montana and Yellowstone National Park, and shortly after that we began our descent into the Salt Lake area. Our approach took us past most of the Wasatch Front before turning around and lining up for landing on Runway 34L. The winds were very favorable and it ended up being a pretty short flight at 8:50—almost an hour shorter than my eastbound flight to Paris, strangely enough.
