It impacts the economy, public infrastructure and quality of life. How serious is the problem? In 2023, Transnet reported that 1,121 kilometres of cable were stolen, an eight-fold increase in five years. Eskom estimates that copper cable theft costs between R5 and R7 billion a year, plus another R2 billion to replace stolen cables. In Cape Town, local authorities say copper thieves cause more than $100,000 in damage every week.
