All Roads Lead to Mertola: Tracing Al-Andalus in Portugal

Laith Marouf joins professor of Islamic archaeology at the University of Evora Susana Martinez for a walk through the ancient Canaanite (Phoenician) and Islamic Andalusi city of Mertola in Portugal's Alentejo region. Mertola's strategic position as an inland port of the Guadiana River ('Wadi-Ana') would make it a commercial center for thousands of years, as during the Islamic period of Al-Andalus in general and under the reign of Sufi philosopher-king Ibn Qasi in particular. The pair visit the Islamic Museum of the city, the archaeological campus, and the historic Almohad Mertola Mosque - the only preserved medieval mosque in Portugal to survive the genocidal Iberian Crusades known as the "Reconquista."
