In the Middle Ages the inhabitants declared submission to the Municipality of Perugia. In this period various churches were built and the construction of the castle began to defend and protect the village. The Dominican order and the Olivetan Benedictine order were present on the island. From 1841 to 1973 it became the property of private individuals who used it mainly as a hunting reserve. In 1973 it was bought by the Province of Perugia. Among the important monuments are the churches of San Giuliano and San Secondo, the Olivetano Monastery and the Castle. More recent is the Garden of Aquatic Plants - Piscina del Porcinai built in 1959 by Pietro Porcinai. 💡 ▪ Church of San Giuliano: The church is of considerable historical interest due to the presence of the remains of construction in "opus reticulatum" (cubilia of 8 cm on the side) preserved in the terracing wall of the church square. The hemicycle structure, crowned by rows of cut bricks, is connected to a possible Roman settlement. It is a medieval building with a single nave adjacent to the castle walls; it has a rectangular plan with a bell gable and is mentioned already existing on the Polvese island in 1028. It is referred to as a parish church and equipped with a baptismal font and is one of the 6 churches on the island together with the following: Church of Santo Stefano (XII century - disappearance), of San Pietro (XII century - disappearance), of San Leonardo ( XII century - disappearance), of San Secondo (XII century - treated in the site), Santa Maria della Cerqua (XV century - treated in the site). The small church, like the others of that period, had in its outer perimeter a strip of land called a "shrine" used if necessary to bury the dead. It was used by less well-off families to commission local painters to execute votive murals inside the church in memory of the dead; in other cases the walls of the church were enriched with votive murals both referring to "grace received" and referring to the patron Saints. From surveys carried out, the walls are covered with layered plasters, with small portions of ancient paintings that are difficult to date. Inside, on the apse walls, frescoes from the 15th-century Umbrian school are visible, representing figures of saints such as San Giuliano, San Sebastiano, San Bernardino, San Rocco and other unidentified figures; old restoration interventions are clearly legible and the paintings are placed in boxes not relevant to the original.
