GAWAI VLOG, JUNE 2024 | steffeuvlogs

I'm back with another vlog! I made a Gawai vlog a couple of years ago which my Aunt Julita has taken liking because of how many times Babeh (and Panchor in general) was featured in it. Gawai—Borneo's native Dayak's Harvest Festival—which falls on the 1st and 2nd of June every year, in its core, shall be celebrated with miring rituals in longhouses. But in the modern days, the festival has been imbued with Christianity in replacement of the original pagan beliefs, along with the colonization of Borneo by the people of the caucasian land. (Personally, it would be so enchantingly beautiful if we could celebrate our harvest festives without the influence of western beliefs. My friend Pici said, if we were to still practice the ways and religion of our own land and our ancestors, she would see herself as a priestess of her tribe, which I think is very fitting towards her aesthetic.) But here I could only present you the modern Gawai celebration—of family gatherings, and feasting with our fellow guests and neighbours. My kampong house has recently been renovated, but I know I share the same sentiment with my fellow native friends of my generation, that I wish the house would be renovated with the aesthetic of the island, instead of full glass windows that might catch heat on a heaty day. Alas, the renovation money doesn't come from me, hahah. Note: I'm not feeling the usual music-on-vlogs yet, I'm still trying to find a style that fits and I think that this type of quiet-or-asmr vlog is the most comfortable for me to do. I'm trying out Canon SX740HS since it's very underused, lounging at my workplace desk. But the quality isn't so great in low-light conditions (my previous vlog was shot entirely on DJI Osmo Pocket 3). I switched to my iPhone 13 halfway because I was too occupied to charge the Canon battery—but for the 2010s digital camera grainy effect, the Canon isn't that bad. But if you wanna invest in a vlogging camera, get a DJI Osmo Pocket 3!
