JAPANESE KEIRIN! KOKURA STADIUM VISIT in FUKUOKA

Though it's been an Olympic sport since 2000, Keirin racing (literally meaning 'bicycle racing') remains a rather mystical discipline in the cycling world. The very first Keirin event was held on November 20th, 1948, and I was invited as part of an entourage from the Taiwan Cyclist Federation (for whom I consult as marketing director of the well known Taiwan KOM Challenge), to head over to Fukuoka Prefecture in Kyushu to witness the 75th anniversary of the inaugural event. We headed to Kokura to the Kitakysuhu MediaDome, the city in which that first event was held, invited by the Fukuoka Tourism Bureau, who have an initiative called CrossRoad Fukuoka (www.crossroadfukuoka.jp) which was created to increase the number of cyclo-tourists from around the world choosing Fukuoka as a cycling tour destination. If you’re into cycling and are planning a trip to Japan, and Kyushu specifically, I recommend fully heading there in November to check out this event. There’s a real buzz around the place, with the dramatic opening ceremony and then with the crowd pouring in to place bets on the racing.
