100 ans de la ligne Brig Disentis : Locomotives à vapeur du DFB

The weekend of July 3rd to 5th 2026, there were festivities in Realp accompanied by special electric diesel and steam trains running all along the Brig Disentis line which was celebrating its 100th anniversary. Since the opening of the Furka base tunnel, the high-altitude line was abandoned and then restored and is now only operated by the Dampfbahn Furka Bergstrecke (DFB) association from Thursday to Sunday during the warm season. The line is no longer electrified which makes for better photos. The diesel locomotive HGm 4/4 61 was supposed to serve as a ‘fire train’ between Oberwald and Gletsch in addition to making trips to Realp. Due to the high risk of fire, steam locomotives were not allowed to run on this section of the line and so the diesel locomotive ensured the continuity of the train service. There was no steam at Oberwald station but I did film the diesel locomotive which will be the subject of a future video, along with the HGe 4/4 I 36 of MGB Historic which ran between Brig and Disentis via the Furka tunnel. The steam locomotives in operation were the two HG 3/4 nos. 4 and 9 which were designed for this line by SLM Winterthur between 1913 and 1914. They ran from Gletsch to Andermatt several times on Saturday and Sunday. The HG 4/4,704 came from Vietnam but was also built in Switzerland, and it ran only between Gletsch and Realp this weekend. Its sister, number 708, was being heated up but was on display in Realp alongside the snowplough formerly used by the RhB and the HG 2/3 6 which was brought to and from the depot by the HG 4/4 every day.
