América Latina después de Mujica | Casillero Vacío #5 | Yamandú Orsi con Juan Elman
A year after Pepe Mujica's death, Yamandú Orsi, the current president of Uruguay, speaks about his legacy and the complex task of governing in Latin America today. Orsi is a member of the party Mujica founded, and his rise to power cannot be explained without Mujica's support. However, the former president played a marginal role in the campaign that brought the Broad Front back to power in Uruguay, and for Mujica, this marginalization was one of his greatest achievements as a political leader. "What mattered to me, and what I fought for, was building a political organization. I spent the last 40 years of my life on that," Mujica told me a few months before his death, when I visited him at his farm. It seemed to me that a good way to remember Mujica and continue that interview was to seek out the successor who had given him one of the last joys of his life. And to explore what he can tell us about Uruguay and the contemporary Latin American landscape. In this interview, Orsi discusses Mujica and his lessons learned as president, just over a year into his term. While some within his party are demanding more boldness from him, Orsi advocates for seeking consensus and agreements in a context of increasing polarization, where Uruguay, a sort of regional oasis in terms of its political system, is increasingly affected by the prevailing winds of the times. Should we look to Bukele? Has the left lost its connection to religion? Is governing more difficult today than it was ten years ago?
