The Crimean Bridge's supports are standing on cracks, and every jolt brings its end closer

Every earthquake, even a small one, contributes to the destruction of the Crimean Bridge's supports, said Oleksandr Kendzera, director of the Institute of Geophysics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, candidate of physical and mathematical sciences, and corresponding member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, in a commentary to Unian. Responding to a question about the earthquake threat to the Crimean Bridge, he noted: "The bridge supports rest on solid ground, but this ground has the potential to loosen. It's an old area with many cracks. Every earthquake, even a mild one, contributes to the destruction of the bridge supports." Kendzera noted that Crimean bridges are generally subject to "local zone" risks. "The earthquake may not be strong, but the structure is located at the junction of two tectonic plates," the expert said. When asked whether the earthquakes that have currently shaken Venezuela in particular could affect earthquakes in our seas and, consequently, the Crimean Bridge, the scientist explained: "No, these earthquakes occur in tectonic structures that have nothing to do with our territory." As for when an earthquake might occur in the area of the Crimean Bridge, Kendziora noted that it is impossible to predict. "No one in the world can simultaneously predict the time and strength of the next earthquake," he said. The expert explained that in order to protect a particular facility being built, it is necessary to know how the ground will move in the event of an earthquake: both under the facility itself and next to it. "This can be predicted, and since it can be predicted, it can be strengthened, and not very expensively, so that an earthquake does not destroy it," Kendzera noted. When asked whether the Russians had reinforced the Crimean Bridge in this way, he replied that seismic maps exist that show earthquake magnitudes. "Obviously, the Russians took the possibility of strong earthquakes into account when building this bridge," the scientist said. At the same time, he emphasized that it's impossible to predict everything, especially since "there are many faults there." Even localized, weak earthquakes can cause dangerous crustal movements, which could lead to liquefaction of the soil beneath the bridge's supporting structures. When asked whether there had been earthquakes in the Azov and Black Seas this year, Kendziora replied that 91 earthquakes had occurred in the Crimean region in 2025. Regarding the fact that such a large number of earthquakes have not destroyed the bridge, he noted that this could be a cumulative effect. As previously reported, Dmitry Grin, a seismologist at the Subbotin Institute of Geophysics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, noted that the Crimean Bridge could be destroyed by earthquakes , which occasionally occur in the region. According to him, the Kerch Strait has extremely unstable soils and its own fault system. In turn, the Russians "purposely changed state building codes and lowered the gravity of this area to justify construction in a seismically hazardous zone."
