Illinois watch restoration part 4: changing a balance staff
In this video I swap out the old balance staff on my Illinois Bunn Special. I discuss the use of a staff remover, measuring the new staff, and choosing the appropriate punches for riveting the staff to the balance. At the end, I discuss what further checks are necessary for the watch to graduate to final cleaning. The balance has been damaged by a bad staffing job in the past, but this change is a success despite these issues. Two corrections. Several times I incorrectly use the word "hub" when referring to the balance hole. Here I am confusing the terminology for riveted staffs with friction-fit staffs, where the balance hole is actually surrounded by a hub. Second, occasionally you hear me refer to the "riveting shoulder." This is incorrect, as the riveting countersink is at the top of the balance shoulder. Sorry for these errors. Thanks for watching, and happy staffing!
