Gyumri (Armenian: ճյումրի) is the second largest city of Armenia* and the center of the Shirak region. History BC. Dating back to ancient times, the city was called Aleksandropol during the Russian Empire and **Leninakan during the Soviet period. It took its current name with the independence of Armenia in 1991. The city is famous for its traditional buildings made of black tuff stone and is known as the art and cultural center of Armenia. 1988 Spitak Earthquake caused great destruction in Gyumri and slowed down the development of the city. Today, tourism, craftsmanship and small-scale industry form the basis of the economy. Gyumri, located 120 km away from the capital Yerevan, attracts attention with its historical *Holy Savior Church*, Kumayri Historical Region and cultural structures. Its population is approximately 110,000 and it stands out as an important city of Armenia with its rich history.
