Our tour today is in São Vicente / SP, strolling along the Fisherman's Deck, the Suspension Bridge, and the city center. São Vicente is a city in the state of São Paulo. Its inhabitants are called Vicentinos. The municipality covers 148.9 km² and had 329,911 inhabitants in the last census. The population density is 2,215.2 inhabitants per km² in the municipality's territory. Neighboring the municipalities of Santos, Praia Grande, and Cubatão, São Vicente is located 5 km northeast of Praia Grande. Situated at an altitude of 6 meters, São Vicente has the following geographic coordinates: Latitude: 23° 57' 46'' South, Longitude: 46° 23' 31'' West. São Vicente is home to the Serra do Mar State Park. The Fisherman's Deck in São Vicente, also known as the Fishing Platform, is a popular spot for sport fishing, photos, and enjoying the sunset, located near the Suspension Bridge and Biquinha, with recent revitalization projects to include a running track and improvements to the structure. It is a place that offers activities such as fishing (fish like pompano, jackfish, grouper), and has facilities with restrooms and a snack bar, although some reviews mention the need for improvements to the "little bar". The São Vicente Suspension Bridge is a famous historical and tourist landmark, the first suspension bridge in Brazil, inaugurated in 1914, connecting the mainland to the island, between the Japuí and Morro dos Barbosas neighborhoods, and being an important connection point and postcard of the city, with an iron and wood structure, recently restored and adapted for vehicle and pedestrian traffic. Characteristics and History: Pioneering: It was the first suspension bridge built in Brazil, fundamental for the development of the region. Location: It connects the mainland to the island of São Vicente, linking the neighborhoods of Japuí and Morro dos Barbosas. Structure: Of iron and wood architecture, with steel cables, and supports local traffic. Inauguration: Inaugurated in May 1914, after construction began in 1911, initially for sewage transport. Heritage: It is listed as a historical landmark and one of the main postcards of São Vicente. The Suspension Bridge continues to be a point of tourist interest, with areas for street vendors and benches to enjoy the view, especially beautiful at night with its lighting, being a place with a lot of history and charm. Main Church - São Vicente Mártir Parish. Built by Martim Afonso de Sousa in 1532 and near the beach where the official founding of the Village of São Vicente took place, the church was destroyed by a tidal wave that devastated the city in 1542. The second church was erected by the people in a location further from the sea, but it was also destroyed, this time by pirates who looted businesses and houses in the region. In 1757, the current Main Church was designed on the ruins of the previous one, where it remains to this day. Its name is a tribute to Saint Vincent Martyr, a Spanish saint who gave the city its name, becoming its patron saint. The building is listed as a heritage site by all three levels of government: IPHAN (1955), CONDEPHAAT (1982) and CONDEPHASV (2011).
