CANUDOS E CANGAÇO: RESISTÊNCIA E CONFLITOS NO SERTÃO

In this video, we will study two of the main social movements of the First Republic: the Canudos War and the Cangaço. You will understand who Antônio Conselheiro was, the role of messianism in the formation of Canudos, the accusations of monarchism made by the republican government, and the four military expeditions that led to the destruction of the community. We will also see the trajectory of Euclides da Cunha, a journalist who covered the conflict. Initially favorable to the government's official version, he changed his view after witnessing the war and recorded his observations in the work *Os Sertões*, an important denunciation of the living conditions and abandonment of the northeastern backlands. In addition, we will learn about the phenomenon of Cangaço, the story of Lampião and Maria Bonita, the role of the coiteiros (those who sheltered bandits), and the debates about so-called social banditry.
