But it is like for Kaz Brekker to be brooding on the rooftops, gazing down at this waterhole of a city like he owns it. And well, he does own parts of it, you suppose. You’ve snuck up there like the shadow that you are and yet Kaz can still sense your presence. “So, you are leaving, then?” he asks. The back of his head remains still. “Unless there’s something to keep me here.” “What else is there?” his whispers are as fine as the rain. You take a heavy step forward. “Is there really nothing else you want to say to me?” Nothing. You scoff and start to storm off when he says, “You were right.” Saints. You thought the day would never come. Even with your backs turned against each other, you can see each other perfectly. And yet still, you want to look him in the eye when he tells you exactly why. You’re standing right next to him now. “The sun summoner.” he says. "You were right." Your breathing turns shallow. “Kaz, if not saints, then who do you believe in?” “Myself.” his eyes turned downward. You shake your head. Piss off. You turn on your heel right when he says, “and you.” You stop and linger a little longer. “And Jesper. My crows.” You glare at him. “Because we flock to you to do your bidding?” He still wont look at you. “Crows don’t just remember the faces of the people that wronged them. They also remember those who were kind. They tell each other who to look after. Who to watch out for. No saint ever watched over me,” finally, he makes eye contact. “Not like you have.” You’ve waited all night to hear something from him and at last, he has. It’s no “Please stay” or “I need you” but it’s something much deeper. He’s expressing gratitude, and if you dare say, a hint of humility. A little would do him good. And you’ve managed to bring it out of him. That’s the most you’re going to get out of him, but that’s enough. “Kaz, I can’t go back to that place. They’ll never let me out again if I do.” His leather gloves crinkle as he tightens his grip on his cane. With a stern voice, he says, “You won’t.” You nod. You believe him. Because that wasn’t Kaz Brekker talking. No, that was Dirty-Hands. You spend the rest of the night hiding in the shadows nearby, watching the city life before you and stealing glances at the Bastard of the Barrel as he looms over his city.
