Introducing the "sentence matrix"

In this video I introduce this new tool called the "sentence matrix" that I've developed along with my colleagues, Sara Lee, Marie Foley and Bruce Howlett. I begin by introducing the concept of finding the "sentence banner" from a group of related sentences, and how we use those related sentences to form a sentence matrix. See a clip of Gr 3 students in my first time ever teaching with this tool! This was a the pre-conference of the Nueva Innovative Learning Conference. I was so pleased to get to teach my first sentence matrix there since Nueva was so early in working with SWI. I first came to that school for another Innovative Learning Conference in 2011! As you can see in the video, the document I created for this lesson had an error in one of the "related sentences." In the second sentence I gave them to represent in the matrix was supposed to be written, "Today, the intelligent class with the wonderful teachers held geodes." But I made the error of inserting the word "the" between "held" and "geodes." I love how the students dealt with my error. And here we see the sentence matrix providing that falsification function of the word matrix. As a result of them finding my error, I revised the document. Click this link for a pdf of the document illustrated in the video: https://drive.google.com/drive/u/0/home That pdf includes the (corrected) lesson you saw the kids work with in the clip from the class. It also includes the extended activity I modelled after the video of Gr 3 students. See what you think!
