14th Global Online Seminar in Biodiversity Informatics: Landscape Genetics

14th Global Online Seminar in Biodiversity Informatics: An Introduction to Landscape Genetics for Biodiversity Research and Applied Conservation Dr. Niko Balkenhol Professor of Wildlife Management, Department of Wildlife Sciences, Georg-August-University Göttingen This seminar can be viewed by two means: via the Google+ event page, and on YouTube Live. Reading material to accompany the seminar is available at https://www.dropbox.com/s/a5ym9ietnbc.... Ideally, all viewers will have read Manel et al. (2003) and Holderegger & Wagner (2008). For those who already know the 2003 paper, Holderegger & Manel (2010) might be a nice additional read. The remaining papers are mostly intended for viewers really interested in diving deeper into the topic. See also a recent blog post dealing with landscape genetics: http://www.molecularecologist.com/201... Dr. Balkenhol received a Bachelor’s degree in Forestry & Forest Ecology from the University of Göttingen and a Master’s degree in Environmental Monitoring from the University of Vechta. This degree focused on GIS and remote sensing for conservation research, and for his Master’s thesis Dr. Balkenhol radio-collared and tracked cheetahs and leopards in Namibia to analyze their movement patterns and habitat preferences. Dr. Balkenhol then work as a field technician for the German Wildlife Foundation and as a private environmental consultant for one year, before going to the US as a Fulbright scholar. He received his PhD in Wildlife Resources from the Universality of Idaho in 2009, and then worked as a post-doc for the Leibniz-Institute of Zoo and Wildlife Research (IZW) in Berlin, Germany, for two years. In 2011, Dr. Balkenhol became assistant professor of Wildlife Management at the University of Göttingen, where he is now full professor and head of the newly-founded Department of Wildlife Sciences.  His research focuses on questions related to connectivity, which we analyze using both landscape genetics and movement ecology.
