The TOEFL Writing tasks are a challenge, therefore you need the right strategy. These 8 tips will help you improve your TOEFL Writing score quickly and efficiently. Think about these tips when preparing for TOEFL Writing. If you use them during your TOEFL preparation, it will be a lot easier for you to remember them in the TOEFL test. FYI The examples I use in the video and in the illustration are made up by me. 1) USE TEMPLATES In TOEFL Writing I used templates for all my TOEFL essays: one template for the integrated essay and one for the independent essay. A template acts as a support for you throughout your TOEFL essays. In TOEFL Writing you only have a limited amount of time and memorizing a Writing template is the perfect way to deal with that. First, if you use a writing template, you will know how to start your sentences. Second, a template helps you structure your TOEFL essay. 2) USE LINKING WORDS In my TOEFL essays I used a lot of different linking words. Linking words are extremely powerful because they boost your TOEFL score. First, if you use a lot of different linking words, you show ETS that you have a broad range of vocabulary and this will get you a higher TOEFL score. Second, linking words help you structure your TOEFL essays. If your essay is well-structured you will get a higher TOEFL Writing score. 3) PARAPHRASE Guys, if you want to improve your TOEFL Writing score you must paraphrase information. In TOEFL Writing you get points for how variable your vocabulary is and how you express your ideas. Therefore, you should not repeat words or whole sentences but paraphrase the information to show that you know the vocabulary to do that. If you want to know how you should paraphrase information in your TOEFL essays have a look at my video where I show you how to paraphrase information for the introduction of the independent essay. 4) USE IF-CLAUSES Guys, if-clauses are score-boosters, it is extremely important that you use them in your TOEFL essays! I used three if-clauses in my independent essay. In TOEFL Writing you must also show that you can write more complex sentences. If-clauses are a perfect way to do that! You should use at least two if-clauses in the body paragraph of your independent essay. 5) USE DIFFERENT TENSES In TOEFL Writing you should use different tenses. Make sure that you use the past, present, and the future in your TOEFL essays. 6) USE PARAGRAPHS To score high in TOEFL Writing you must use paragraphs. Paragraphs help you structure your TOEFL essay and thus make your writing clearer. The reader of your essay must understand your way of thinking and you make it a lot easier for him if you present your ideas in a structured way. 7) ANSWER THE QUESTION In TOEFL Writing you must answer the question given because your writing score also depends on how well your essay answers the question. Make a check after every paragraph whether you are still answering the question given. If yes, go on writing your essay. If no, edit this paragraph until it answers the question. 8) WRITE MORE THAN THE WORD COUNT The word count plays an important role in whether you will get a high TOEFL Writing score or not. I would recommend going a bit over the word count in your TOEFL essays. Of course you should not write a lot more, you also will not have the time for that.
