Title (ES): Política Legislativa Penal en Brasil: Desafíos Científicos, Metodológicos e Institucionales Title (EN): Criminal Legislative Policy in Brazil: Scientific, Methodological, and Institutional Challenges Recorded on Monday, 22 June 2026, in Ghent, this session of the Human Rights in Context Talking Series features Prof Dr Chiavelli Facenda Falavigno in a discussion on human rights, criminal law, and legislative policy in Brazil. The event opens with introductory remarks by Prof Dr Clara Burbano Herrera, Director of Human Rights in Context, Ghent University. Our guest speaker, Prof Dr Chiavelli Facenda Falavigno, presents her lecture entitled “Criminal Legislative Policy in Brazil: Scientific, Methodological, and Institutional Challenges”. Her presentation examines the development of criminal legislative policy as a field of research in Brazil, situated at the intersection between criminal policy and legislative analysis. Prof Dr Falavigno reflects on some of the main challenges in this field, including the need for an interdisciplinary epistemological approach, the collection and use of institutional data, and the development of effective methodologies to assess the impact of criminal legislation. Chiavelli Facenda Falavigno is Professor of Criminal Law at the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC, Brazil). She was a postdoctoral researcher in criminal legislative policy at the University of Málaga in 2022. She obtained her PhD in Criminal Law from the University of São Paulo, with a research stay at the University of Hamburg.
