Some could generate their own control track when recording if there was no sync pulse incoming from the TV signal (as VCRs use the sync pulses in an analogue TV signal to create and record a control track on the tape as a reference point for speed and tracking when playing back). Other VCRs - like the one that recorded this - couldn't generate their own control track to record in the absence of sync pulses, they were entirely reliant on the presence of sync pulses being received from the TV signal. It's that lack of control track that triggers VCRs like mine to go to a grey (or blue) screen when playing back. There's no option in the menu on my VCR to switch off this grey screen feature). Transmitter shutdown briefly seen around 29:30
