In a second, their wonderful Christmas vacation turned into a nightmare. A giant wave separated them for several days, the longest of their lives. Fortunately, María, her husband Enrique, and their sons Lucas, Tomás, and Simón managed to reunite. Their story is told in Juan Antonio Bayona's film, 'The Impossible'. Now, nine years after that tsunami, María participated in the 5th Congress of "What Really Matters," and in the Euskalduna Palace in Bilbao, before a packed auditorium, she shared her story to convey what truly matters in life. Before her presentation, I was able to spend a little time with her, and honestly, listening to her speak sometimes brings a knot to your stomach when you think about the situations they had to endure. Other times, her words awaken you and make you realize that we give too much importance to things that don't deserve it.
