Only when it became clear that the disaster could not be hidden did the communist leadership give an order to evacuate the population. People were allowed to take only clothes and documents. They said, don't worry, you will be back in three days. The pets understood everything. Cats looked into the eyes of their owners, dogs howled, trying to break through to the buses. But they were categorically forbidden to take them with them. As soon as the houses were empty, they began to shoot their pets. As if under a radioactive wind, a few days after the accident, thousands of Ukrainians were driven out to the May Day parade. A parade that death itself took. Footage of smiling Kyivans marching along the main streets of the city was broadcast on all channels. They said that the party was controlling the situation. People were safe and protected. At that time, hospitals were already overflowing with irradiated people. The first person of the state, General Secretary of the Central Committee of the CPSU Mikhail Gorbachev, managed to make a public statement only two weeks later. Today we are talking about the tragedy at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. In this issue, we will not repeat why the accident occurred and what role the negligence of engineers played, since many films have already been released about this. In particular, a really good five-part series “Chernobyl”.
