How "Physique Inflation" is Warping Our Perception of Fitness

What is physique inflation? Essentially, this is the notion that physiques have been getting increasingly aesthetic and strong over the recent decades. What once would have been considered a top-tier or even elite physique is now considered “mid.” Deadlifting 500lbs is no longer considered to be that rare. On the one hand, it’s great that we’re all getting stronger. On the other hand, it’s something of a monkey’s paw situation… That’s because a lot of the physiques we’re seeing these days are either the result of PED use and/or heavy editing. The result is that we’re not competing on an even playing field. Not only that, but seeing such unobtainable physiques and performance can leave us feeling disheartened and frustrated. Worst-case scenario, it can result in further PED use, body dysmorphia, eating disorders, and more. This is the dark side of physique inflation and it’s why it’s so important that we keep a level head and think about this correctly. Because, ultimately, it shouldn’t matter what anyone else is doing. It doesn’t matter if your physique isn’t in the top 1% on Instagram. You should train for you and you shouldn’t be competing with anyone, anyway. And remember: those that cheated to get where they are likely are NOT as healthy as they look! This is why I propose an alternative to bodybuilding: body crafting. Rather than always trying to grow and always focussing on that one metric, instead think about all the aspects of your body you’d like to work on and build something bespoke. That way, physique inflation does not matter.
