All of that raw energy comes roaring through in this new mono-to-stereo remix of one of The Beatles’ most powerful early performances. This version of “Money (That’s What I Want)” allows the listener to hear the power of The Beatles before George Martin’s piano polish was added. Martin’s piano contribution would certainly become the song’s signature element, but before that studio addition, John, Paul, George, and Ringo had already delivered a fierce, energetic cover much closer to the way they performed it live — without piano. George Martin added his piano after The Beatles had completed their basic performance, and when he added even more piano days later, the group was out of the country on vacation. While that piano became one of the most recognizable parts of the finished record, removing it reveals something different: “Money” becomes a powerful guitar-driven Beatles performance. The strength of the track was also somewhat diffused in the original stereo mix, which separated George Martin’s piano into the opposite channel from the guitars, bass, and drums. This remix is designed to bring the band’s raw power back into focus. In November 2025, new recordings were added to The Beatles Anthology project. The second track on the new Anthology 4 album was the highly entertaining “Money (That’s What I Want) (RM7 Undubbed)” — unfortunately presented only in mono. But within that mono recording, powerful stereo ambience was still embedded, and the goal of this remix was to unleash those elements in a way that suggests how the song might have sounded just a few years later, when The Beatles had more multitrack flexibility than the two-track recording limitations they faced on July 18, 1963. That date marked the beginning of the recording sessions that would become the With The Beatles album. This new stereo remix, like the Anthology mono mix, offers a great way to hear The Beatles closer to how they sounded live when they covered this song many times publicly. They had even recorded “Money” earlier at their failed Decca audition, before being signed by EMI. The “RM” in the Anthology title refers to “Remix Mono.” While many historians have used or associated RM with the term “Reduction Mix,” in this case it refers to the seventh mono mix attempt. A reduction mix is normally used to open up a free track after all available multitrack channels have been filled, but reduction mixes were a rare occurrence when working with a two-track recorder. With two-track recording, the usual method was to capture the instruments on one track and the vocals on the other, allowing a well-balanced mono mix to be created later. For pop recordings in 1963, mono was king; stereo was still largely an afterthought. The “Undubbed” reference in the title simply means that George Martin’s piano contribution is not present. “Money (That’s What I Want)” was originally recorded in 1959 by Barrett Strong, who would later become better known as a songwriter — though he did not write this song. It was written by Berry Gordy and Janie Bradford of Motown fame. The Beatles’ version became the rocking closer of With The Beatles, much as “Twist and Shout” had closed their previous album, Please Please Me. With The Beatles was released in the United Kingdom on November 22, 1963, at a time when Beatlemania had already captured England. American fans would not hear The Beatles’ version of “Money (That’s What I Want)” until April 10, 1964, when it appeared on Capitol’s The Beatles’ Second Album, placed as the fifth track on side one.
