Rabbi Jonathan Sacks, who passed away six years ago, wrote: “Viruses attack the human body, but the body has a very large and sophisticated defense: its own immune system. So we ask ourselves: how can viruses survive and multiply? Sacks’s answer is simple: because they mutate. Antisemitism mutates, and in doing so, it defeats the immune system created by cultures to protect themselves against hatred. In the last two thousand years, there have been three mutations: one, that has caused Jews to be hated for being a nation; two, hated by Christians as part of Church doctrine; and three, hated for being supposedly racially inferior. Sacks concludes: now we are experiencing a fourth mutation, anti-Zionism, the denial of the right to have a state.”
