Next to the the temples (and to the sacred water spring) there was the sacred mountain, in which yogi used to live and meditated in caves, sharing their pure energy with the other people living inside the community. In Katas Raj Temple, as in all the other ancient temples, there is a stream of water, the central element for any sacred places.
