※ This video was produced in 2012 and may differ from the current situation. ▶ Robbery of Retirement Funds According to a 2010 survey by the Korea Investor Protection Foundation, 27.9% of respondents reported having been or nearly been victimized by financial fraud, with those in their 60s accounting for the largest proportion. So, what's the reality? Contrary to popular belief, most of the elderly victims of fraud we met were from difficult circumstances. These seniors have spent their entire lives saving money, but the scammers, using sweet talk, steal it and run off. Many seniors live alone or lack financial literacy, leaving them unable to properly manage their finances, leaving them struggling to live the rest of their lives with their retirement funds stolen. We investigate the reality of these scams and similar practices targeting the elderly. Institutional financial institutions also steal seniors' funds. The difference is that banks sell risky investment products with legal action in place. If a problem arises, they present the relevant documents, leaving only the seniors who invested to suffer. We investigate the reality of the Korean financial sector's misguided practice of selling high-risk financial products to the elderly and explore alternatives. ▶ Retirement Funds? It's Hard to Just Get by Now If you have any money to invest, you're lucky. Among seniors aged 65 and older, only 39% believe they're prepared for retirement. The rest are completely unprepared. The only options for seniors without retirement funds are working or receiving support from the government or society. However, with limited opportunities and insufficient social support, seniors face difficult retirements. Why are there so few jobs for seniors? We examine the current employment landscape for seniors and delve into their difficult lives. ▶ Highest Elderly Poverty Rate in OECD Countries Korea's elderly poverty rate (the percentage of seniors earning below the median income) stands at 45%, the highest among the 34 OECD member countries. This is twice the rate of Japan (22%), Greece (23%), and the United States (24%), and 14 percentage points higher than Ireland (31%), which ranks second after Korea in elderly poverty. We investigate the reality of elderly poverty in Korea, which has the highest rate of elderly poverty among OECD countries. ▶ Isolated Deaths Many elderly people live alone, either because they are alone in old age or because their children face financial difficulties. The number of elderly people aged 65 and older living alone increased from 544,000 in 2000 to 1.021 million in 2010 (an 87.7% increase), and is projected to increase significantly to 2.334 million by 2030. Amid this trend, so-called "isolated deaths," where the uncared-for elderly are discovered long after their death, are on the rise each year. Which elderly people living alone are at risk of dying alone?
