We have almost doubled our national debt in the span of six years and are now paying more than a trillion dollars a year in interest alone. Consumers have evaporated their savings and filled the gap with short term debt. We are fixing the housing crisis by just making it easier to take on more debt, and betting whatever is left on a market that is… overly optimistic… to put it generously… Almost everybody acknowledges that these systems are overdue for some kind of correction… but at the same time… nobody is exactly volunteering to pay the accrued costs. A balanced budget sounds nice until it means tax hikes and gutting government programs, everybody loves the idea of affordable housing until it’s their house that's becoming affordable and consumers have basically become a protected species that must not be interfered with. If we know this can’t go on forever, the next best question is… how long can it go on for, and does extending and pretending that these issues can be delayed indefinitely only make their inevitable comeuppance even worse?
