After the Six-Day War in 1967, Jews returned to Jerusalem's Old City and the Western Wall. Every year on Jerusalem Day, many people wear white, carry national flags, and sing and dance their way into the Old City. This year, we also went with our two children. Along the way, we saw reserve fathers carrying guns and pushing strollers; Jews gathering in the streets for evening prayers; a large police presence at Damascus Gate; and shops temporarily closed along the Via Dolorosa. It's a moving day, yet one that's difficult to simplify in a single sentence. For many Jews, this is one of the few times of the year when they can freely walk into the Old City and the Western Wall with their children. They can tell the next generation: this isn't just an imagined land, but a real, tangible land. But walking through Damascus Gate and seeing the closed streets and shops also reveals another layer of complexity. The city, normally belonging to all its residents, seems more easily divided into "you" and "us" on this day. Jerusalem is important precisely because it cannot be simplified.
