A two-year-old is trying to gain their own autonomy. The change in their behavior is often noticeable from one day to the next, making it completely incomprehensible for many parents. The child begins to stomp, sob, scream, roll on the ground – doing anything to achieve their goal. What does a two-year-old's rebellion look like and where does it come from? We present the most popular truths and myths. Two-Year-Old Rebellion – How to Deal with It? - Hey Parents - Episode 2 ► Two-Year-Old Rebellion DOESN'T EXIST! MYTH. Although no internationally respected psychologist ever coined the term "two-year-old rebellion," both Freud and Erikson clearly identify certain behaviors that are characteristic of this period of childhood. Two-year-old rebellion is a conventional term for a certain stage in a child's development when they are developing their autonomy. ► How long does a two-year-old's rebellion last? This period usually begins around 1.5 years and lasts until approximately 3 years of age. This is the moment when a child first begins to be independent and tries to demonstrate this at all costs. At this stage, a child can develop extremely important traits that will be needed later in life: ✔ self-control, ✔ independence, ✔ self-confidence. To make this possible, the right parental attitude is essential. On the one hand, a toddler needs independence, but on the other hand, they still require adult care. Therefore, a balance must be struck between accepting their independence and setting demands on their parents. ► In this conversation, you will learn: ◄ ✔ What is the Two-Year-Old Rebellion syndrome? ✔ How to respond to a two-year-old's rebellion? ✔ A period of intensive child development ✔ Two-year-old rebellion is a very important period in a child's development ✔ Intensive child development ► Expert: Martyna Filipiak, Child Psychologist http://mama-psycholog.pl/ ► The conversation will be led by: Katarzyna Grajnert - originator and creator of the website: http://www.HejRodzice.pl ► How to cope with changes in children's behavior? Here are some tips for dealing with two-year-old rebellion: ✔ Allow them to experience anger. During an outburst, remain calm – give your child time to calm down, name their emotions, and simply be there. Learning to process anger is a time-consuming process that requires adult support and knowledge (link to aggression and hysteria). Maintain a daily rhythm. A child's tantrums can often be related to fatigue or a disruption in their daily rhythm. Young children need structure and predictability.6 If a child knows that after dinner it's time for a bath, then a story, and then bedtime, it will be easier for them to submit to it and fall into this rhythm without protesting. Children should also have clearly defined boundaries, as their absence causes stress and anxiety.7 Allow them some independence. To ensure a child's sense of autonomy, it's worth allowing them to make age-appropriate decisions (e.g., which of two toys they want to play with).8 A child's need to demonstrate their own will is a difficult test for those around them, but it serves an important developmental function, ensuring they become independent individuals in the future.
