All aboard for Union Pacific 844, the “Living Legend”! Steam locomotive 844 was built in 1944 by the American Locomotive Company and is the only steam locomotive to never be retired from a major railroad in the United States. 844 was also the last new steam locomotive purchased by the Union Pacific. Today, 844 travels throughout the Union Pacific System as an ambassador of goodwill to communities along the way.
