The Last Chapter of The Pathans by Olaf Caroe

The Pathans by Olaf Caroe:The Last Chapter: The Pathans and the Frontier Since 1958–2026 What if Sir Olaf Caroe, author of The Pathans, awoke in the year 2026 and discovered everything that had happened to the Frontier after his death? This audio presentation is my work of historical imagination inspired by Caroe's life, writings, and geopolitical ideas. In this fictional account, Olaf Caroe awakens in his Sussex home forty-five years after his death and begins reading the history of Afghanistan, Pakistan, the Cold War, the Soviet-Afghan War, the rise of the Taliban, and the transformation of the Frontier between 1958 and 2026. As he studies the historical record, Caroe confronts an unsettling question: did strategic ideas born in the age of empire contribute, however unintentionally, to the tragedies that later engulfed the Pathan homeland? Drawing upon the themes of The Pathans, this imagined final chapter explores the relationship between geopolitics, empire, the Great Game, the Cold War, political Islam, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and the fate of the Pashtun people in the modern era. This is not a historical document, but a literary attempt to imagine how one of the twentieth century's most influential students of the Frontier might have reflected upon the consequences of the ideas and policies that shaped the region after his death.
