Chennai Egmore Railway Station Redevelopment Project Egmore Railway Station, which functions as the terminus of the express train services operating for South Tamil Nadu, was designed in the Indo-Saracenic style by English architects Henry Irwin and E.C.H. Burd on an area of 2.5 acres and was built by a Tamil contractor named Srisaminath Pillai at a cost of Rs. 17 lakhs. Its construction work was started in September 1905 and was inaugurated on 11 June 1908. When this Egmore Railway Station came into use, the first train service called Boat Mail was started. When this railway station was built, its terminal building was 300 feet long and 71 feet wide in two stories, the first platform adjacent to the terminal building was 895 feet, the second platform was 700 feet and the third platform was 650 feet. A footbridge and a 602-foot long canopy were constructed to connect these 3 platforms. A signal control room was opened at Egmore Railway Station in 1935 after the railway line from Chennai Beach to Tambaram was electrified. When the Chennai Beach to Tambaram railway line was converted from meter gauge to broad gauge between 1992 and 2004 to accommodate the growing population, a new platform for suburban train services at Egmore Railway Station came into operation in November 2004. Similarly, in 2004, the construction of the second entrance building for this railway station on the Poonamallee Highway side was started and it was opened in June 2006 at a cost of Rs. 11.53 crore. In order to significantly reduce the electricity requirement of this railway station, 250 kW solar panels have been installed on the roofs of platforms 2, 4, 6 and 7 to generate electricity since 2018. After this, the Railway Board approved the renovation of this Egmore railway station at a cost of Rs. 20 crore under the Railway Station Development Scheme and the work for this started in 2019. Accordingly, facilities such as toilets suitable for the use of the differently-abled, a nursing room and a changing room were provided in three types of waiting rooms on the ground floor of this Egmore railway station terminal building, namely the air-conditioned waiting room, the upper class waiting room and the second class waiting room. An air-conditioned dormitory and 16 restrooms were renovated on the first floor of the terminal building. In addition, three electric lifts were installed in the terminal building to facilitate easy access from the ground floor to the first floor. To facilitate easy access to the platforms from the public platform of this railway station, a moving staircase was provided on the west side of the footbridge towards Gandhi Irwin Road, a moving staircase was provided on the 7th platform, a moving staircase was provided on the 8th & 9th platforms, and a moving staircase was provided on the east footbridge to connect the 10th & 11th platforms. Also, granite was laid on the floors of the 5th, 7th, 8th & 9th platforms, roofs were installed on some platforms, and a new 12th platform was constructed for suburban train services at this railway station. In addition, decorative lights were installed on the facade of the terminal building of this railway station. Egmore Railway Station earned a revenue of Rs. 125 crore in the financial year 2021-2022 and Rs. 525.96 crore in the financial year 2022-2023. Under the Amrit Bharat scheme of the Railway Board, a fund of Rs. 734 crore 91 lakh has been allocated to upgrade this railway station to international standards, and this project is being implemented over an area of 1,35,406 sq m. The construction contract for this development project has been awarded to DEC Infrastructure and Projects India Pvt Ltd, a company based in Hyderabad, and the project management contract for this project has been awarded to Tata Consulting Engineers Ltd, a company based in Mumbai, at a cost of Rs. 14.56 crore. The contract period for this has been fixed at 36 months. According to this project, 4-storey terminal buildings, 6-storey multi-storey parking buildings, commercial complexes, 3-storey freight office on the Poonamallee Highway side, new railway quarters and substation on the Gandhi Irwin Road side, a 72m wide departure platform, a 36m wide arrival platform, a 12m wide arrival footbridge, a 6m wide goods handling footbridge and large-scale roofs are being constructed on the Gandhi Irwin Road and Poonamallee Highway sides. For this project, organizations such as Chennai Metro Rail Corporation, Chennai Metropolitan Development Corporation, Greater Chennai Corporation, Chennai Water Supply & Sewerage Board, Highways Department, Municipal Transport Corporation, Green Committee, Heritage Committee, Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board have provided full cooperation for this project.
