The Slow-Burn Horror Of HERETIC
Heretic takes the classic horror setup—innocent people entering a house they shouldn’t—and turns it into something uniquely unsettling and thought-provoking. Directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, the film follows two young Mormon missionaries, Sophie Thatcher’s Sister Barnes and Sister Paxton, portrayed by Chloe East, who arrive at the doorstep of Mr. Reed, a seemingly polite and curious Englishman played by Hugh Grant. Reed initially presents himself as an eager listener, charming and intelligent, someone interested in learning more about their faith. But soon, his questions grow more pointed, his hospitality tinged with something darker. As the two missionaries realize they're locked in, Reed's true intentions emerge. Reed isn’t just interested in a theological chat—he’s here to dismantle their beliefs and challenge their very identities, turning their faith into both a weapon and a target. What begins as a seemingly safe encounter quickly spirals into a nightmarish mental, physical and spiritual ordeal, forcing Barnes and Paxton to confront their own convictions, fears, and doubts in a twisted game of faith and survival. The film is an intense, intellectual dive into the power of belief and the dark places the human mind can go when theology becomes an obsession.
