Classic Welsh Lagers, Stella Artois, Budweiser & Modelo. World Beers made in Wales

Thursday Beer Club is back in the snug for another weekly beer review, and this week we’re putting a Welsh twist on three of the world’s biggest lager brands in our latest episode: **“Classic Welsh Lagers”**. The line-up? 🇧🇪 Stella Artois 🇺🇸 Budweiser 🇲🇽 Modelo Now before the comments section explodes — yes, we know these beers are Belgian, American and Mexican in origin. But here’s the reason behind the title: all three are brewed right here in South Wales at the AB InBev Magor Brewery near Newport. That’s right — three international lager giants, all brewed on Welsh soil. So the big question is: when these beers are all brewed in the same brewery by the same parent company, can you actually taste the difference? Or is branding doing most of the work? That’s exactly what we’re finding out this week in the snug. As always with Thursday Beer Club, expect honest beer reviews, pub banter, blind tasting reactions, questionable expert opinions and plenty of laughs along the way. Whether you’re a lager fan, craft beer drinker or just enjoy a pint and some good entertainment, this episode is for you. 🍺 STELLA ARTOIS – THE BELGIAN ICON Stella Artois dates back to Leuven, Belgium, where brewing began in 1366. The Stella brand itself was launched in 1926 as a Christmas beer, with “Stella” meaning “star” in Latin. Known for its crisp continental style and famous chalice glass, Stella became hugely popular in the UK during the 80s and 90s as a premium lager choice. Today, much of the UK supply is brewed at Magor Brewery in Wales. 🍺 BUDWEISER – THE KING OF BEERS Budweiser was first brewed in St. Louis, Missouri in 1876 by Adolphus Busch. Inspired by lighter European lagers, Budweiser became one of America’s most famous beers thanks to massive advertising campaigns, sports sponsorships and its smooth, easy-drinking style. From Super Bowl adverts to the famous Clydesdales, Budweiser became a true pop culture icon — and now much of the UK version is brewed in South Wales. 🍺 MODELO – MEXICO’S RISING STAR Modelo Especial was launched in Mexico City in 1925 and has exploded in popularity worldwide over the last decade. Known for its refreshing, smooth flavour and slightly sweeter malt profile, Modelo has become a favourite among lager drinkers looking for something crisp and easy-going. Like Stella and Budweiser, UK Modelo is also brewed at Magor Brewery. Which means your “Mexican” lager may actually be more Welsh than you realised. 🍺 THE MAGOR BREWERY CONNECTION Located near Newport in South Wales, the Magor Brewery is one of the UK’s largest brewing sites and produces huge volumes of beer for the British market. It’s a fascinating example of how global beer brands are now brewed locally under multinational ownership — and it inspired this week’s showdown. Can Belgian, American and Mexican lager identities survive when they’re all brewed in the same Welsh brewery? That’s what we’re putting to the test. 🍻 IN THIS EPISODE 🍻 We’ll be comparing: ✅ Taste and flavour ✅ Crispness and drinkability ✅ Aroma and appearance ✅ Sweetness vs bitterness ✅ Value for money ✅ Session potential ✅ Which lager surprised us most ✅ Final ratings and overall winner And because this is Thursday Beer Club, there’ll also be: 🍺 Pub stories 🍺 Welsh humour 🍺 Heated lager debates 🍺 Plenty of laughs from the snug 👇 LET US KNOW IN THE COMMENTS 👇 🍺 Which lager is your favourite? 🍺 Did you know they’re all brewed in Wales? 🍺 Can you taste the difference between them? 🍺 What beers should we review next?
