Letting Go: My Story of Healing Through Music
Sometimes I am floored at music's capacity to take us by the hand and walk us into our own inner worlds (even the parts we might not want or know how to relate with), transforming suffering into healing and beauty. Writing "Letting Go" was one of those experiences for me. You see, I grew up Mormon; a religion with so many beautiful things, and some things that really hurt me. After decades of practicing the faith of my upbringing devoutly, I realized I was going to need to say goodbye to that community if I was going to heal. Enter, the Muse. :-) For an entire year leading up to the realization that I needed to let go and move beyond, I kept hearing what turned out to be the 1st half of this tune. Turns out, something in me was preparing my inner life for the goodbye it knew was coming. When things came to a head, and the prospect of leaving seemed to overwhelm me, I sat down and played through that unfinished melody. Only this time, something unlocked the rest of the composition, as the music seemed to be guiding me into corners within that I hadn't been able to experience before. I couldn't be more thrilled than to have these incredible musicians on the first recorded version of this tune, "Letting Go."
