The Cultural Impact Of Reggae & Soul In Great Britain | Our History
The film opens with footage of young black men dancing in a dancehall with a large sound system to reggae music. This is juxtaposed with a nightclub where a mixed crowd of white and black people are dancing to soul music. Subscribe to Our History: https://bit.ly/3v5mKBG The programme looks at the cultural differences between these musical styles, and suggests that these differences go beyond simple musical taste - they are indicative of a fundamental political decision that every black person has to make - whether to integrate or segregate. The film states that reggae followers tend to feel that racial integration is difficult in Britain and interviews young men (many with dreadlocks) about their beliefs. It then moves to the soul scene and interviews sharply-dressed soul music followers about their aspirations, multiculturalism and whether or not they have experienced racism. The groups are asked what they think of each other with some surprising insights. Includes interview with stylist Winston Isaacs at a black women's hair salon.
