The Venetian Republic stood as an independent maritime nation for nearly 11 centuries until it fell to Napoleon in 1797. The Doge served as an elected head of state, standing in direct contrast to a monarchy. For centuries, the Doge's Palace stood as a powerful monument to Venetian authority, blending the Doge’s private residence with government offices and the city's prisons. The Palace first opened its doors as a public museum in 1923 and today attracts around 1.5 million visitors annually, making it the most visited palace museum in Venice. While the Doge's Palace offers plenty of beauty, the spectacular Grand Council Chamber remains the absolute highlight. Measuring an enormous 53 meters long by 25 meters wide, it is one of the largest rooms in Europe and was designed to host up to 2,000 nobles for crucial governmental meetings. Built in 1340 without a single supporting pillar, this room is large enough to fit about five standard tennis courts. The wall behind the Doge's throne is dominated by Tintoretto’s monumental masterpiece Paradise, which is widely recognized as one of the largest oil paintings on canvas in the world. Rather than freezing his angels, Tintoretto fills the canvas with some 500 figures cascading in spiralling waves. Centuries of Venetian military and naval triumphs are depicted through epic artwork along the north and south walls. The art was highly functional. The paintings of naval victories against the Ottomans and the worship of the state were designed to impress foreign ambassadors and to remind its own nobles of their solemn duty to the powerful Republic.
