The Siege of Alesia: Caesar’s Greatest Victory I SLICE HISTORY

The battle of Alesia was the final act in the Gallic Wars, a battle between Rome and the Gallic tribes. Two men personify this final battle: Caesar, the ambitious Roman General, who dreamed of victory to establish his authority, and Vercingetorix, chieftain of the Arverni, and leader of the united Gallic tribes. The battle played out beneath the fortifications of Alesia. To avoid a face-to-face battle with the powerful Roman army, Vercingetorix chose to enclose himself with his men behind the walls of Alesia. He hoped to wear down Caesar's troops with a long siege. The Roman General, who had decided to starve out the Gauls, had monumental fortifications built around the city to stop any supplies from entering. Vercingetorix realised the trap was closing in on him and sent out for reinforcements to take Caesar's army from behind. Soon, soldiers were amassed on the plain of Alesia. The Gallic cavalry launched an attack on Caesar's fortifications. The Gallic forces came in number and were incredibly courageous, yet the Romans prevailed thanks to the genius of their exceptional builders. After a siege that lasted several weeks, Vercingetorix was obliged to lay down his arms.
