Las tres noticias de Carlos Alsina para empezar el día: "Aún no vuelve Puigdemont"
This Friday, July 17th, Carlos Alsina brings us the stories to start the morning: From the Madrid Provincial Court's decision to have Begoña Gómez tried by a jury to the wildfires ravaging Spain. #spain #puigdemont #catalonia https://www.ondacero.es/noticias/espa... The Madrid Court upholds the jury trial for Begoña Gómez, the Government celebrates the CJEU ruling on amnesty, and several wildfires keep various autonomous communities on alert. This is how Carlos Alsina summarizes the day's main news stories. The Provincial Court upholds jury trial for Begoña Gómez The Provincial Court of Madrid has upheld Judge Juan Carlos Peinado's decision to have Begoña Gómez tried by a jury. The court reduced the charges against her from four to two, excluding corruption in business and misappropriation, and also ruled that her passport should be returned. However, the court endorsed the judge's reasoned arguments and maintained that there is "numerous indications" to continue the proceedings. The five judges consider it "perfectly plausible" that the defendant used her position as the Prime Minister's wife to facilitate obtaining the professorship and cited the precedent of the Nóos case, in which Iñaki Urdangarin's family relationship with Infanta Cristina was a factor considered by the court. The resolution also emphasizes the impact that corruption cases have on public trust and institutional legitimacy. From Moncloa Palace, however, they maintain that Begoña Gómez is innocent and characterize the proceedings as a politically motivated case driven by accusations based on false information and promoted by far-right organizations. The Government interprets the CJEU ruling as an endorsement of the amnesty. The Government and the Catalan independence movement have welcomed the ruling of the Court of Justice of the European Union on the preliminary questions raised regarding the amnesty law. The court considers that European regulations do not preclude the application of the amnesty in relation to the CDR (Committees for the Defense of the Republic), understanding that the events did not involve serious human rights violations, and further concludes that the Catalan independence movement did not compromise the financial interests of the European Union. Justice Minister Félix Bolaños argued that the ruling represents a step toward "full reconciliation" and asked both the Supreme Court and the Constitutional Court to allow this process to be completed, facilitating the return of Carles Puigdemont and the full political participation of the pro-independence leaders. Wildfires keep Aragon, Madrid, and Castilla-La Mancha on alert. The spread of several wildfires continues to be one of the main concerns of the day. The fire that broke out in Orés (Zaragoza) has already ravaged nearly 76 square kilometers, forced the evacuation of some 700 residents from five towns, and threatens to spread toward Navarre. In the Community of Madrid, the Lozoyuela fire has led to the evacuation of several hamlets, isolated homes, and a camp with 80 children, while nearly 2,000 people remain under lockdown. The Civil Guard has arrested a suspect after several residents reported his flight from the area where the fire originated. Also worrying is the fire in La Mierla (Guadalajara), whose rapid spread, exceeding two kilometers per hour, has already affected some eight square kilometers, significantly complicating firefighting efforts.
