Politicians who ask, "Why must it be Honam?" cannot answer the question, "Why hasn't it been Honam until now?" On June 29, 2026, two contrasting pieces of news overlapped on the same day. On the very day Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix announced plans to invest 4,755 trillion won in the southwestern region, including Gwangju, players from Baejae High School at Mokdong Stadium during the Blue Dragon Baseball Tournament chanted the cheering song "Gaya-ji Gaya Starbucks Gaya-ji"—which invoked the controversy surrounding Starbucks' mockery of the May 18 Gwangju Uprising—and shouted "Tank Day" at Gwangju Jeil High School. This video highlights the contradictions in the logic of People Power Party politicians who call this investment "government control," and traces Korean society's "tradition of impunity," which extends from the failure to liquidate pro-Japanese collaborators to the pardon of Chun Doo-hwan and the non-punishment of those responsible for the May 18 Gwangju Uprising. We take a look at the history of the anti-Japanese resistance movement at Gwangju Jeil High School, the martial law troops' entry into the school in May 1980, and even the statue of Syngman Rhee, the "Founding President," on the grounds of Baejae High School. Through sociologist Kim Hong-joong's "Survivalist Generation" and Um Ki-ho's *Can Pain Be Shared?*, we ask how hatred is inherited across generations. We have also included memories of a childhood friend who moved up from Jeonju and was reluctant to talk about his hometown, the stereotypes surrounding the Jeolla dialect in gangster movies of the 2000s, and a personal day when I cried twice upon encountering these two pieces of news.
